The Lounge Update

Today is, I feel, my first day of real unemployment. Dave went off to work at 6.30am leaving me with precisely nothing to do except wonder how everyone back at my old job is, if the visual meeting will go well today and if anything’s cropped up yet that I totally forgot to tell anyone or handover. Let’s face it, it’s highly likely.

So, after a quick shower and catching up on last nights ‘Last Tango..’ (omg, tear jerker, poor Kate), I set about trying to sort out our lounge/dining/living area! I did get some stuff done when I was here in August but now I’m here for good it needed sorting and arranging properly.

I brought quite a few posters and arty things rolled up in tubes when I came which I just popped in standard Ikea frames, instantly transforming blank walls into home. We aren’t allowed to make holes in the walls so I’ve gone for a more ‘curated’ look!

Books were another thing I determinedly carted from the UK, with many a withered look from people who questioned the need for old fashioned paper when you ‘can just buy a kindle*’. I love books, everything from travel, beauty, fashion to fiction, and am not going to apologise for it. A few select DVD’s also made the cut; Breaking Bad, The Inbetweeners and The Mighty Boosh, all can be watched and rewatched in our opinion!

Just a note for anyone who travels with excess books (especially large coffee table books), customs will be suspicious. Very suspicious. Books clearly state ‘drug smuggler’ to officials at airports.

A few cushion covers from home didn’t take up much space in my case and are great for an instant feels like home vibe.

Our fridge has also become a collection of pictures and things. Magnets are a great way of enabling a constantly evolving look. The pictures of great times make me smile every time I open the fridge.

And finally, I just had to show you the Owen Davey original print of Manchester I got Dave for Christmas. Manchester is where we met and lived for a long time so it’s got a special place in our hearts.

So the flat is feeling more like home, I’m really glad I made such an effort to bring pictures, cushions and books out with me. I’m hoping it will help me to settle in quicker. Right….now I have to find something else to do for the rest of the day, thank god I have some books!

*In light of how expensive books are here, and how tricky it is to read your iPad in bright sunshine, I am reconsidering my resistance to a kindle….
