Whilst we can get most things here in Bangkok, there will always be the odd thing we can’t or that we just miss! With that in mind, I thought I’d share with you some of the slightly random things we have asked our visitors to bring out for us.
Toothpaste here is terrible, there is nothing more to say. There are the same brands including Colgate but the toothpaste is just not the same. I don’t know what it is specifically but it just doesn’t feel like it does anything, whiten or even clean! So we try and always have a stock of our favourite English toothpaste, Colgate Max White One.
Fajita Spice Mix
Burrito, taco, nacho, quesadilla, you name it we can get the spice mix for it…unless that is, you want fajita seasoning. Nowhere have we managed to locate the seasoning packets for fajitas. You can pay a small fortune for a complete kit in some supermarkets but we just want the packet!!!! So these little packets of goodness go on to the list.
Sun Tan Lotion
Despite this country experiencing some serious yearly sunshine, there is a distinct lack of suntan lotion available and what there is seems really expensive. We have come across bottles of Nivea or Piz Buin that cost over £20 and given how much we get through its just ridiculous so any suntan lotion on offer or at bargain prices our visitors bring for us! The only lotion I do specifically ask for is Piz Buin Ultra Light Dry Touch Face Fluid SPF30 which is just the nicest face lotion I have ever come across. It isn’t greasy and doesn’t cause breakouts, it leaves my skin feeling moisturised and protected but its light enough and matte enough to wear under makeup if needed.
Red Onion Chutney
We cannot find Red Onion Chutney anywhere despite being able to find an abundance of the most random jams and chutneys, so this was one of the first things we asked my sister for who’s coming out to see us next week. We are eating a bit more cheese as a treat but its just not the same without some chutney to moisten the mouthful! Plus it always makes cheese on toast taste like a dream.
I don’t actually drink coffee but Dave does, enjoying nothing more than a cafetière of fresh coffee on the weekend but he has found the choice of ground coffee here quite limited and bitter in taste. Hence the request sent back home for some of his favourite illy ground coffee.
Being blonde here means there is a distinct lack of accessories. I have just used up my last blonde hair bobble so I’ve asked for a few new bits; a pack of blonde grips from Boots and some blonde hair bands.
Galaxy Minstrels: They’re delicious and I miss them, plain and simple. I’m down to my last bag…please send more soon….anyone…someone…
Other things we asked for in the early days when we hadn’t yet found them or found the best places to buy them were swimwear, cheese, Haribo, candles (Muji of course) books and bedding. Thankfully aside from the Muji candles, we have solved all of the above in some shape or form!
I know you will probably read this and think some if not all of these things seem a little ridiculous but they are ultimately what makes life outside your comfort zone that little bit easier…and if any Bangkokians know where I can get any of the above please let me know!
